In much the same vein as Don’t Break The Rules in Catch Me If You Can, Brotherhood of Man in the 2011 Broadway revival of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a show stopping number that completely blew me away. Rob Ashford is one of my favourite choreographers and this number demonstrates why. The vocabulary of movement he created with these virtuosic dancers embodies the energetic, playful, and masculine tones of the show.
Of course, I can’t forget to mention Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. What seemed like the epitome of stunt casting when first announced, Radcliffe proved nay-sayers wrong with an energetic and perky performance as J. Pierrepont Finch. Radcliffe supposedly worked with a private vocal and dance coach months before rehearsals began to prepare and his hard work shows. He is able to not only keep up with these seasoned Broadway dancers but shines while doing so.
Still one of my favourite dance numbers I ever had the pleasure of seeing on Broadway!
P.S. A shout-out to Ellen Harvey who brings her crazy vocal chops to her role of Miss Jones. You may have seen her in Toronto as Ms. Darbus when the National Tour of High School Musical came to the Princess of Wales Theatre.
