Sharron Matthews’ Triple Threat

Sharron Matthews is a Toronto based actress, performer and cabaret star. She shone in the huge musical productions of the 90s: as the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Lottie in the original Canadian cast of Showboat and Madame Thenardier in the North American tour of Les Miserables. Sharron has been nominated for the Dora Awards, starred in the megahit Mean Girls and just returned from a multi city sold out tour of her latest cabaret show, Sharron Matthews Superstar: Gold!

What musical will you always remember for its choreography/dancing?

When I was 27 years old I was in Leslie Arden’s gorgeous show, The House of Martin Guerre at Canadian Stage. Denise Clarke, the award winning choreographer and member of One Yellow Rabbit, was in charge of the choreo and staging of the big numbers. It wasn’t a very ‘dancie’ show by classic musical standards More

The Year of The Child – To mom or not to mom?

Yesterday I went to the grocery store. I was stopped literally 10 times so that people could look at the babies. At the check-out line, the cashier literally stopped scanning my items, came out from behind the desk and talked to me about the babies for 5 minutes. As much as I love talking about having twins, generally I want to keep them moving when we are out and about, so turning 10 minute grocery trips into a series of dialogues with strangers isn’t terribly appealing.

The conversation generally goes like this:

“Wow are those twins!?”

“How old are they?”

“5 months”

“Wow… you really have your hands full. It’s so nice of you to give their Mom a break!” (or some variation on this)

Every dialogue like this ends with this “Choose Your Own Adventure” for me. More

Out There – Interactivity on the Great White Way

Last week, one of my all time favorite musicals, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, opened at Studio 54: its first Broadway revival since the original 1985 run. The critics unanimously agreed that it’s a delightful romp, the “fun is infectious” and “extremely enjoyable.” What the show lacks in substance, it makes up for in entertaining panache. The New York Times even commented that “With the explosion of social media inspiring a taste for talking back, the time seems especially ripe for the Roundabout Theater Company’s boisterous revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” I don’t know that I would consider an audience determined ending particularly social media saavy, but Isherwood’s comment does indicate an excitement towards increasing audience integration in the theatre.

A few blocks away, the audience is playing an equally integral role in a very different Broadway bedtime story. More
